You want a few of these: Wood’s Powr-Grip Pick-Up Stick!
You’ve spent a long time making that daguerreotype plate nice and shiny, haven’t you? Don’t want to get any fingerprints on it, do you? Enter the Pick-Up Stick vacuum cup, model PU0950 . This thing is great. You can use this for moving the plates around, holding the glass while you clean it, etc.
The Pick-Up Stick eliminates fingerprints and cut fingers when lifting the glass to remove that last speck of dust before closing the back of a frame. The Pick-Up Stick uses a small, hand-held vacuum pump to attach to smooth, nonporous surfaces such as glass and Plexiglass®. It comes with a 1-1/4″ [32 mm] interchangeable rubber pad and a durable plastic handle. Optional pads are available in 3/4″ [20 mm] and 1″ [26 mm] diameters. To attach the Pick-Up Stick, press the vacuum pad against the glass and depress the plunger with your thumb. Once the Pick-Up Stick is attached, the corner of the glass can be lifted without finger smudges on the clean inside surface, allowing quick removal of annoying dust particles. In addition to lifting corners of framing glass, the Pick-Up Stick is an indispensable tool for precise placement of stained glass, small coins, lockets and other memorabilia.
Daguerreotype Lecture and Presentation
I have decided to offer a new service this year: speaking engagements. I have made these presentations informally before but now I am formally making my services available to you. I am charging a very modest fee for presentations and I’m eager to visit with your group!
I am well versed in the creation and history of daguerreotypes. I bring the unique experience of actually having made the images to my presentation. I am extremely passionate about the subject and am excited to present to students of all ages about the history of this fascinating medium. The presentation is custom-tailored for your audience be they aspiring artists, collectors, preservation scientists, museum patrons, history students, bookbinders, etc. Examples are provided of contemporary work and historical pieces that may be passed around amongst the group.
For an additional fee I will demonstrate the becquerel daguerreotype process for your group. This demonstration is not nearly as in-depth as the workshops I lead. It is, instead, designed to show the steps involved from start to finish.
My general presentation runs approximately 60 minutes. I require a video projector capable of 1024×768 (minimum) and a sound system in the venue.
