Schneider 150mm Super-Symmar Lens: Object of Desire

Bling Bling! I’ve been wanting a new lens for quite a while because the 300mm Ektar that I have for my 8×10 is rather bland. When I use the Ektar with a 4×5″ Daguerreotype, it’s nice because ISchneider Optics Super Symmar XL 150mm f/5.6 have a telephoto but the bellows extension for a 1:1 is just crazy to the tune of about 30 inches. I have always craved the wide angle because I can capture a much more realistic vision than I can with the so-called “normal” lenses. True, for portraiture, I’d be better served with the Ektar’s focal length but nonetheless, I can drool and for $2599.99, drool I will.

Those of you who have known me and were willing to listen to me blather on for longer than ten minutes know that I have tried to remove myself from the desire to get the latest and greatest camera gear. When I got into photography, I was easily excited by the whiz-bang gadgets. The author of this Durham Herald-Sun article captured my change in outlook best when she wrote:

“There are photographers out there that nit-pick lens details. I don’t even know what lens is on my camera. It came with it. I know its capabilities and that’s fine,” Danforth said. There are lots of cool gadgets, he said, but he’s just not interested.

That’s pretty succint, eh? At least I managed to remember the brand name of the damn lens on my camera now! Scary graphs and charts here.
