Whoops. Very Whoops.

After several misfires and extra confusion over the past month, I finally received my latest batch of 4×5″ plates. I received two whole plates (6.5″x8.5″) also and I’m very excited to make bigger Daguerreotypes.
I worked on a commission yesterday and in doing so met some very nice people with the North Carolina Historic Sites. I’ve been informally invited to give a talk/demonstration as part of a fundraiser. There are no details yet but I’ll keep you updated here.
File this under the “Lessons Learned” department: I made two beautiful Daguerreotypes yesterday but the first was royally screwed up. It just goes to show that if you mess up any step in this complicated process that you can ruin a perfectly good image. During the development process, I discovered that the wind had knocked over the developer and the red film had come in direct contact with the 250w light bulb I was using to develop! After a small fire and an awful smell, I cleared the plate to rebuff and discovered that, indeed, it was ruined. Oh well… try, try again. The second attempt (luckily I sensitized two plates!) turned out far better than the first and I’m very happy with it. I’ll have a scan up in the gallery section soon.
