My last day at AV is this coming Friday. It will be a shame to leave so many friends behind but I’ve got to do what’s best for the family and the wallet. KONTEK invited me up last week for a party and I got to tour some really interesting neighborhoods looking for homes. I’ve decided that I want to find a nice farm to settle down on… 5-10 acres, a pond, a workshop, stables, etc. Basically, I want an idyllic place in which to work on my art. Maybe I’ll get a horse too.
The boxes are packed at the house and the darkroom has been converted back to being a pantry off of the kitchen. Not many pantries have exhaust fans but I consider it a selling feature. I’ve never sold a home before and I suggest to my readers that they e-mail polite suggestions to the contrary if I, in the future, suggest that I will do it again. My wife and son will have to stay down in Columbia, SC for a few weeks while I’m working the new job in Durham, NC. While I’ll miss them dearly, the situation will afford me the time to concentrate on my new duties at my new office.
I had a conversation this evening with an old friend from college. Among other subjects of conversation, I brought up my views on the future of humanity (we weren’t even drunk either). One of the themes that’s been cropping up in my latest work is the idea of our species rallying together towards some greater goal. What will it take to make the world drop their petty differences, accumulation of personal belongings, and self-interest? In the past week, we saw a meeting of the world’s top leaders discussing the relief efforts to underdeveloped nations, environmental concerns, and a devastating bombing in central London… it just doesn’t seem like we’re GOING anywhere; no discoveries, no advancements, just apathy and lethargy. I’ll be the first to admit the hypocrisy of my writing about such things without doing much of anything for others but I’m trying to see the larger picture. I want our species to be one that pursues intellectual concerns for the sake of them and a species that demands equality of all people. I don’t have my statements fully formed, I apologize if this sounds a little Free Verse but it’s late and I’m feeling reflective. I think it’s time for bed and some music.
