Fine Art Photography, galleries, and the Termesphere

There’s no news on the gallery front but I toured several galleries in Charleston on Saturday looking for one with a collection that compliments my work. I was surprised to find two galleries with high quality photographic prints and I was further impressed with the fact that two of the three were Charleston residents! One of the galleries was particularly interesting to me and is now on my short list of candidates for Daguerreotypes in the future. The meeting with the gallery at the start of the month helped to confirm my doubts as to Columbia’s reception of fine art photography. While the owner was impressed with my work (the Daguerreotypes in particular), she didn’t see much of a market in Columbia for it. Although it was decided that the timing for the gallery owner was poor (too many artists), I left the meeting feeling motivated to make new work and continue down this path… Just not in Columbia.

I’ve been inspired to make a new series of photographs of toys from my childhood. Over the Christmas break, I’m going to rummage through my Mom and Dad’s attic for subjects. These will eventually be Dagurreotypes but I’m not going to shoot live-plate, I’ll be shooting 4×5 or 8×10 film and contact printing.

On another inspirational note, I’m devising a way to create an image on a live-plate spherical Daguerreotype. My dream is to realize fully spherical inward-looking-outward representations of scenes on sterling silver spheres. Try looking at these paintings to visualize what I’m talking about. I love sculptures and I think that I could bridge the gap between flat print photography and sculpture in this way.
