The Daguerreotype: Contemporary work by Jonathan Danforth

For some reason, the State Fair refused my submission of the Meridian piece because it was “framed with glass.”  They told me that all metal-framed submissions had to be framed behind plexi-glass.  I tried to explain that no self-respecting artist who cared about the longevity of their work would *ever* use plexi-glass because of its archival instability but the explanation fell on deaf ears.  The Fair people did accept the Daguerreotype but, as I expected, it wasn’t well appreciated by the fair-goers.  The fair’s Best In Show award ($3500!) went to a color *LAB* print of a ketchup bottle and a mustard bottle sitting on a table.

Also, violating one of the contest rules, the first-place photo in the Amateur category was obviously shot between 10 and 20 years ago due to the color shifts.  The first-place photo in the Professional category (the category that I entered) was fantastic and quite deserving but I can’t remember the name of the artist.

Except for some pro bono work for my company’s business card, I haven’t picked up a camera in the past two months; the pro bono was digital too so I barely count that!

Oh, that reminds me!  My office violated my copyright last week by using a photo of mine for the back of a business card without my knowledge or permission.  On the card, the picture is mimeograph purple and has been craptastically digitally altered by the fine folks at i4Design.  The alteration is manifest mainly in the REMOVAL of part of the stripes on the awning and extensive cropping.  What am I doing about it?  Nothing.  I talked to my boss about it and he said “Oh, I didn’t know that you didn’t know that we were using it.”  Sigh.
