Ruminations on the Standard Excellent Photo
8/24/2004 12:07AM:
I’ve been working on other areas of the danforthsource web tonight. It’s been a long time since I used mySQL and I’m very rusty. Programming this tonight reminds me of something that I want to share with those of you reading these pages.
The editor of LensWork Magazine has a fascinating insight on the state of photograph as art in the current issue. In the preface, the editor makes the distinction of photographer and artist. My personal experience has shown me that my development over the years has been a journey from photographer to artist. I first began to see this a few months ago when, looking at my work, I realized that I was quite proficient at making what I call SEP (Standard Excellent Photos). The SEP is a misleading indicator of one’s journey as an artist. When I realized that the SEP is not the be-all end-all of photography, I began to branch out by looking to painting, sculpture, poetry, and literature as sources of inspiration (not to mention emulation).
For all it’s wonderous qualities, the SEP very often lacks soul or passion. In revelatory fashion, I’ve started to understand that my work has evolved over the past few months from the pursuit of the SEP to the realization of my vision. That, in the end, is my goal. Exciting times are ahead, my friends. Keep a vigilant eye!
